Before you begin, move the slider the
entire length of the timeline slowly, reading each caption and taking note of
the animations as they change.
What five words come to mind after
seeing the entire time-line?
1. In
science what does the expression “big bang” refer to?
2. Who
proposed the theory and when was it proposed?
3. When
did the “big bang” occur?
Move the slider along
to determine when the following events occurred. Give your answer as a time
after the big bang event.
a. Formation
of hydrogen atoms
b. Formation
of our “sun”
c. Formation
of the earth. Which gas that we rely on
today was not present in the early earth’s atmosphere? What word is used for
the absence of this gas?
d. Formation
of the first cell. What type of cell was
it?
e. Approximately
when did the level of oxygen start to increase and what caused this increase?
g. How
many major extinctions have there been and when did they occur?
h. When
did Homo sapiens evolve?
4. For
what percentage of the time of the universe’s history has life existed?
5. If
you were making a timeline of the history of the universe where 1 year is equal
to 1mm, how far would you have walk to cover the distance of the timeline? Some
people still believe that the earth is a mere 6,000 years old! Why would people
still believe in this?
Imagine that you are a time traveler. In groups of 2 to 4 prepare a story that
tells the history of the universe in a poem, song or dance or any other way you
like and present this to the class.

The Mohorovicic Seismic Discontinuity
...
The discovery of MOHO
This
video will help you understand how changes in expected velocities
registered by seismographs after an earthquake can be used to determine
the presence of changes in the materials inside the Earth. It explains
how Mohorovicic discovered the discontinuity between the crust and the
mantle.
